Summary: Response to this prompt by superbadgirl: "Someone is dosed with a hallucinatory drug, and someone else has to talk them off a literal ledge. Aftermath snuggles and/or realizations." I have never been on drugs of any sort, so I apologize for any inaccuracies in Steve's behavior. Hope you like it! (I feel like I rushed the ending, but it's almost one in the morning here and I want to get this posted for you before I went to sleep. Hope it turned out all right anyway!)

God damn it, Danny thought furiously, clenching his shaking hands into fists and wracking his brain for a way out of this. When this was over with, he was going to get the number for the lawyers Rachel had used during their divorce and sue the pants off of Rylan Pharmaceuticals. Seriously, who left untested hallucinogens lying unguarded in the middle of empty laboratories?

"Steve," he called out, and damn if his voice didn't break on the name. He cleared his throat and tried again. "Steve, please listen to me."

Steve frowned a bit and rocked forward a bit on his heels, and Danny's heart leapt up into his throat until he moved backward again. "I don't want to," he said, tilting his head slightly to the left. "I want to jump."

Danny gulped and did the one thing he knew he shouldn't do—he looked down. Shit. Thirty-seven stories; no way Steve would survive that fall. "Please," Danny begged, taking a tiny step closer to Steve. "Please, babe, I need you to come down from there, okay?" He glanced over the side of the building one more time and shuddered at the thought of that drop. "Take my hand, okay? Come back down here for me."

Steve shook his head. "But I don't want to," he said, rocking slowly back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. The careless see-sawing motion was wrecking havoc with the last threads of Danny's control. "I want to jump." His frown deepened. "They're waiting for me, Danny. I can hear them. My parents…they're calling for me. I want to jump." He turned his head fully to look at Danny for the first time since he'd come up to the roof, and Danny was poleaxed by the deeply sad and genuinely confused look on his face. "So why aren't I jumping, Danny? Why don't I jump?"

Danny took another slow step forward. He was within arm's reach of Steve, now, and he reached an arm out to grip his wrist. "For me, babe," he said, his voice cracking. "For me. For me, and for Gracie, and Chin and Kono and…and everyone who loves you, Steve. Everyone who'd miss you." He swallowed around the lump in his throat and tugged gently on Steve's wrist, urging him down off the ledge. "Please."

A slow smile spread across Steve's face, his eyes warm as they locked with Danny's. "My mom…she likes you," Steve murmured, half to himself. "She thinks I should tell you."

Danny blinked and tightened his grip on Steve's wrist. "Tell me wha—"

And then Steve was kissing him. Danny started, jerked back in surprise, and his movement unbalanced Steve, who started falling sideways. Danny saw him fall in slow motion, his heart beating a million miles a minute, and reached out frantically to grab him. Steve, wide-eyed, reached for his hand, and together they managed to pull him back upright. Danny stared at him for a few seconds, fighting to calm his racing heart, and then said breathlessly, "Down. Now."

This time Steve obeyed, climbing down off the ledge and just staring at Danny for several long moments. He seemed to be a bit more clear-headed but his eyes were still slightly glazed over, and fuck if Danny was going to have a conversation this important when Steve was this high. "C'mon, babe," he said gently, pulling on the hand he was still gripping tightly enough to cut off the circulation. "We need to get you to a hospital A.S.A.P., okay?"

Steve just stared uncomprehendingly at him, looking terribly lost, and Danny let out a deep sigh and leaned forward to pull Steve into a tight hug. "I love you, you goof," he said gruffly, chin resting on Steve's shoulder. "As in I am in love with you, okay? So stop giving me the puppy dog eyes and let's get you checked out, and then once I'm positive you're not going to keel over on me we can investigate this further. Deal?"

Steve shivered and pulled him closer, and Danny couldn't be sure but he thought he felt the phantom impression of a kiss on the top of his head. "Yeah. Yeah, okay. Deal." They stood there for a few moments longer, wrapped up in each other's arms, until Steve whispered, "Danny?"

"Yeah?" Danny prompted, pulling back a little to look Steve in his slightly-glazed but brightly shining eyes.

"I'm in love with you, too," he admitted with a shy grin. And Danny's heart sped back up again, but for an entirely different reason. And as he leaned forward to kiss Steve—properly, this time—he pondered how things in life really didn't always turn out the way you'd expected them to.

And decided maybe he wouldn't need the number for that lawyer after all.
